A little bit about our famous Loaghtan Sheep
The Manx Loaghtan is a rare breed of small primitive, short-tailed mountain sheep, native to the Isle of Man, dating back to the Bronze Age. The name Loaghtan is derived from the Manx Gaelic words “Lugh” (mouse) and “Dhoan” (brown) which describes the unique earthy “moorit” colour of their fleece. Both the ewes and the rams sport horns, the rams especially growing two, four or even six magnificent straight or curly specimens.
We commissioned artwork from Meriel Burden who is an amazing artist specialising in animals of all kinds but especially dogs, and also artist (& scientist at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton) Graihagh Hardinge whose family have Loaghtans, so that we could produce these amazing products which really capture the traits of the Manx Loaghtan sheep breed. We also have cards by well respected wildlife artist Dr Jeremy Paul, and tea towels by Alice Rose Fayle design.
